ALIA Biennial Conference

Discover your profession

The ALIA Biennial 2012 conference is being held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney from Wednesday 10th to Friday 13th July. The conference theme of "discovery" was chosen to stimulate delegates into exploring and discovering their own experiences of the library and information profession.

An interesting programme has been formulated around themes such as partnerships, both within the profession and the client community; innovation in library spaces; the value of library and information services in a range of contexts, and a glimpse into the future exploring information delivery via new methods such as tablets. 2012 is also the Year of Reading, which provides an impetus to explore the wonders of reading and related topics including the impact of social media.

There will be an exciting line-up of speakers including NSW State Librarian Dr Alex Byrne; The Hon. Michael Kirby, former High Court judge; Richard Glover, ABC Radio 702 presenter and author; Anita Heiss, award winning author and Ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and the 2012 National Year of Reading, and Ingrid Parent, the 2009 winner of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) award for Distinguished Service to Research Librarianship.

Trimagic will be exhibiting at stand 59. More news about what we are showcasing will follow as the event draws closer. Visit the ALIA Biennial Conference website to find out more about this great conference.

Portable devices

Deliver your OPAC remotely

As technology evolves to support the work practices of an increasingly flexible work force, Trimagic is developing different ways of delivering information remotely to users: via BlackBerries, iPhones, Android & Windows smartphones and other handheld devices. While full-size websites can be displayed on these devices, viewing them typically requires a lot of scrolling around and zooming in and out. Our aim is to develop URL links to your OPAC that are specifically designed for the varying screen sizes of handheld devices.

Our design would focus on features including:

  • Button and icon driven navigation to minimize interaction with the keyboard.
  • Search as you type so that keywords automatically present to the screen.
  • Pre-configured searches accessible via buttons or tick boxes e.g. subjects, new items etc.
  • Pages optimised to fit into small screens.
  • CSS (cascading style sheet) file to control fonts and colours etc.
  • Automatically shorten long URLs.

As with many Trimagic applications or designs, our goal is to customise solutions according to your needs. If you would like to discuss this new development, please contact us.

Software plug-ins

Printing labels from the browser and Events Diary
The label printer plug-in enables the user to format and then print labels in PDF format from any textbase in the browser. The product can be configured to integrate with any of your textbases and fields, and the label stationary you use. When printing, it is possible to specify from which label to start printing, thereby preventing wastage. Use the plug-in to print labels without the inconvenience of exiting the browser environment.

The events diary is an automated task management/alerting tool that integrates with any textbase in your browser solution. The calendar can be configured with the pre-defined search of your choice (e.g. due date), textbase (e.g. loans) and report form displayed when an item in the calendar is clicked.

The events diary eliminates the need to perform searches required for effective information management. It can integrate with an unlimited number of textbases, and also with Trimagic's Profiler product so that alerts are automatically delivered via email. An event within the diary can be actioned immediately simply by clicking the item link in the calendar. This will re-direct the searcher to the right record in the textbase. An unlimited number of entries can be accomodated on a given date, and they are colour-coded to distinguish between different calendar entries (e.g. loan due dates; subscription renewal dates etc).

See our plug-ins brochure for more details.

Trimagic provide a full consultation and configuration service with the purchase of any plug-in. Call us to organise a demonstration or discuss your requirements.

Recent solutions

QLD Parliamentary Library

In late 2010 Mary Seefried, the former QLD Parliamentary Librarian, engaged consultants to determine the LMS requirements of the library. These consultants suggested TIMS as a possibility, and visits were made to a couple of installations in Brisbane and Melbourne. Library management made the final decision to purchase TIMS in early 2011. The development of the system is a long term project as there is no dedicated project manager or team. At this stage, the target date for completion and launch is July 2012.

There were several key reasons why the Trimagic solution was selected:

  • The installation is extremely large, with over a million records in total. There was a need to search rapidly for large amounts of full text including newspaper articles from 1993, and Hansard reports from 1991. The combination of TIMS and Discovery Server has the capacity to manage these very high volumes of data.
  • TIMS has flexibility - it is easy to create new textbases and reports with minimal IT or vendor support. It is possible to customise the system further and incorporate new features and plug-ins as needs evolve over time.
  • TIMS offered extra potential with respect to client delivery, including Profiler for current awareness, and the plug-ins InfoBasket, Dashboard and Calendar to name just a few.

In addition to TIMS, the library has purchased the Trimagic Discovery Server (TDS). The TDS provides the library with an extremely powerful OPAC for very rapid retrieval of millions of bibliographic records, including full text articles. The OPAC integrates with TIMS, so that the resulting display of a record may include data from Google Books as well as the catalogue record from TIMS.

Aside from rapid retrieval of data, the TDS is rich with features including:

  • Single and multiple character wildcard searching; fuzzy searches; proximity searches.
  • Capacity to add an unlimited number of extra fields for advanced searching.
  • Spelling suggestions to bypass typing errors.
  • Capacity to refine searches using facets, e.g. author, material type etc.
  • Alphabetical browsing of indexes.
  • Predictive searching which will display relevant content.
